The most popular carbon cartridges used in general filtration today are usually the lower priced blocks. What you probably don't realise is that the larger majority of these cartridges are a blend of coconut and coal based (CB) carbon.
Coal based carbon is cheap to use and extracts chemicals equally as well as coconut carbon, so it suits the manufacturers to use this rather than the more expensive coconut carbon. The down sides to coal based carbon are numerous.
For example, it may contain heavy metals (industrial waste). It does have a higher level of iron so when too much CB carbon is used in the blend the filter can (and often does) display signs of rusting. When this occurs the taste from the filter deteriorates rapidly. The idea of effective filtration is to remove contaminants, not introduce them. The problem for you is that unless you ask, you would never know the difference in appearance between Blended and Pure Coconut cartridges.
